The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, which are the mechanical core of the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace with its evaporator coil mounts in a utility closet, attic, or garage and is the piece that cools the air moving through your home.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, carrying refrigerant through insulated copper tubing that passes through an exterior wall. A thermostat goes on an interior wall and is the control point that tells the whole system when to run.
