The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at ground level, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. The indoor air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives inside, most often in a utility closet, attic, or basement, and is where the system meets the air that circulates through your home.

A refrigerant line set runs between those two units, connecting the outdoor and indoor sides through the wall or foundation. The thermostat goes on an interior wall and gives you control over the whole system. A condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor coil to a floor drain or outside.
