The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the hardware that does the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace cabinet stands in a utility closet, basement, or garage and contains the evaporator coil and blower that move conditioned air through the home.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting the indoor and outdoor sides of the system. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and serves as the control point, telling the system when to run and at what target temperature.
