The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad along an exterior wall, and it releases the heat pulled from your home. The indoor air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits inside, most often in a utility closet, basement, or attic, and it absorbs that heat from the air passing over it. When either piece fails, the whole system stops cooling.

The refrigerant lines run between those two units, carrying the charge that makes the exchange possible.
